🌟 The Virtues of Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf (RA)🌟
✨ Introduction
Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf (رضی اللہ عنہ) was one of the most distinguished companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He is counted among the Ashara Mubashsharah — the ten companions whom the Prophet ﷺ personally gave the glad tidings of Paradise.
Born in the Banu Zuhrah clan of the Quraysh tribe, the same tribe as the Prophet’s mother Hazrat Amina (RA), he was known for his wisdom, piety, generosity, and immense love for Islam. His real name was Abd Amr, but after embracing Islam, the Prophet ﷺ renamed him Abdur Rahman, meaning “Servant of the Most Merciful.”
🕌 Early Acceptance of Islam
Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf (RA) embraced Islam in its early days through the efforts of Hazrat Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (RA). He was among the first eight individuals who accepted the message of Islam and stood by the Prophet ﷺ during the most trying times in Makkah.

He migrated to Abyssinia (Habsha) in the first migration and then to Madinah in the second Hijrah, sacrificing his home, wealth, and comfort for the sake of Islam.
👫 Brotherhood in Madinah
Upon arriving in Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ established a system of Mu'akhah (brotherhood) between the Muhajirun (emigrants) and the Ansar (helpers). Hazrat Abdur Rahman was paired with Hazrat Sa’ad bin Rabi (RA), a wealthy Ansari who offered him half of his wealth and one of his two wives in marriage.
However, Hazrat Abdur Rahman (RA) responded with utmost dignity and said:
“May Allah bless you in your wealth and family, just show me the way to the market.”
He went on to become one of the wealthiest men in Madinah by the grace of Allah and through honest trade.
💰 Wealth and Generosity
Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf (RA) was a successful businessman. But his wealth never made him arrogant. He was known for his immense generosity and would spend in the way of Allah abundantly.
💎 Examples of His Charity:

During the Battle of Badr, he was one of the few who fought with exceptional valor. In Battle of Uhud, he sustained more than 20 wounds, and one of his legs became lame due to a deep injury.
🕊️ Humility and Simplicity
Despite being one of the wealthiest Muslims of his time, Hazrat Abdur Rahman (RA) led a life of humility. He would often cry remembering the sacrifices of his brothers who died in battles without any material gain.
“Mus'ab ibn Umair was martyred and was better than me. He was shrouded in a single sheet... How can I enjoy wealth when they sacrificed everything?”
This statement truly reflects his deep sense of humility and gratitude to Allah.
🌹 Status Among the Companions
Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf (RA) was part of the six-member council (Shura) formed by Hazrat Umar (RA) to select the next Caliph after his martyrdom. This council was tasked to choose the next leader of the Muslims — a proof of his trustworthiness, intellect, and importance.

🌟 The Glad Tidings of Paradise
The Prophet ﷺ once sat among his companions and said:
“Abu Bakr is in Paradise, Umar is in Paradise, Uthman is in Paradise, Ali is in Paradise, Talha is in Paradise, Zubair is in Paradise, Abdur Rahman bin Awf is in Paradise...”
(Tirmidhi, Hadith 3747)
This hadith alone establishes the immense virtue and status of Hazrat Abdur Rahman (RA) in the eyes of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
📿 His Worship and God-Consciousness
He was a man of deep taqwa (God-consciousness). He would spend long hours in worship, recite Qur’an abundantly, and was known for being punctual in his prayers.
He once said:
"We were tested with hardship alongside the Messenger of Allah and were patient. Now we are being tested with ease and prosperity — and we are not being as patient."
This highlights his awareness of the spiritual dangers of wealth.
🏡 Death and Inheritance
Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf (RA) passed away in 32 AH during the Caliphate of Uthman ibn Affan (RA). His funeral prayer was led by Hazrat Uthman (RA) and he was buried in Jannat al-Baqi, near the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.
He left behind a huge estate — thousands of gold dinars, properties, and animals — all of which he had used for the service of Islam. Even in his will, he gave 1/3rd of his wealth to charity, including shares for the Mothers of the Believers.
